The Ian Potter Museum of Art
University of Melbourne 07 Nov 2007 to 17 Feb 2008
Curator: Joanna Bosse
Earthly reflections of heavenly thingsbrings together three senior Australian artists from different cultural, religious and artistic traditions whose art practices reflect a consistent engagement with mystical and non-secular matters. Featured artists are Asher Bilu, Leonard Brown and Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
Each of the artists featured in Earthly reflections of heavenly things is motivated by distinctly different aims, and their artworks refer to various histories of visual communication. Yet all three share a non-representational visual language that is immersive, materially rich and markedly experiential. Bilu, Brown and Kngwarreye are not dogmatic or emphatic in their approach to art making; their works are open propositions that communicate through the language of abstraction.
Internationally acclaimed installation artist and painter Asher Bilu returns to Sydney with ‘In-Visible’, a site-specific installation at Wilson Street Gallery. The 180 square metre layered membrane of transparent paint will transform the gallery creating a labyrinth of light and shadow.
